Power of Redefining Success and Value Driven Planning for Mom Entrepreneurs

Success has been defined for you by your family, your educators, top media outlets like Forbes, Entrepreneur Magazine and SUCCESS Magazine, and movies.

All too often, success has been visually linked to a dollar amount, status symbols such as your zip code, the places you vacation or the bag you carry.

While money can be part of the equation - #Ilovebagstoo - it does not equate to success on its own.

SUCCESS IS MORE THAN MONEY

Let’s individualize success.

Let’s redefine success.

Let’s allow every woman to take time to truly define what success looks like and feels like for herself.

Since this a community of mompreneurs, I’m going to share some prompts that have helped me, a mom entrepreneur with 2 kids ages 10 and 9, with a baby on the way, to redefine success at the loving age of 39.

HOW TO REDEFINE SUCCESS FOR MOMPRENEURS

Using my Edit to Expand Method, I guide members of HLAM Inner Circle thru 3 core steps, so they live success on their own terms.

STEP 1: Letter to My Future Self

One of the issues with having a loose concept of success is that once you reach that mountain, you may not enjoy the view.

Consider writing a letter to your 5+ years older self. I find that’s a wide enough window for MANY goals to come to fruition. It’s also a massive chunk of motherhood time, so you’ll want to consider family evolution.

Write down what “the view” of success will look like, feel like, heck even smell like!

This activity will help inform you decision making, because there is no use climbing someone else’s ideal mountain of success.

STEP 2: Value Driven Planning

In my 20s, I was driven by ego, professional status, and connecting/creating community with women.

I wanted to make a mark, to prove something – to myself, to my parents, to world!

But, values evolve, motivations evolve.

Don’t wait for December – do the following activity NOW!

Ask yourself:

  • What used to drive me, that perhaps is no longer a priority value?

  • What projects/activities light me up right now?

  • What values unique the above?

The purpose of this activity – and I go in depth into this practice at the kickoff of every new HLAM Inner Circle group – is to empower you know what's a "hell yes" goal/collab/event vs waste of your precious time.

Value Driven Planning is the compass, it will inform how you operate your life. It will ensure you are defining success on your own terms.

EX OF VALUES: travel, flexibility, community, money, philanthropy, food, family, mornings, evening, books

STEP 3: Year at a Glance

I don’t care if you’re reading this and it’s January 1st or July 15th, do this work NOW.

Yesterday is always the best day to implement a new habit – today is still better than tomorrow!!

Okay, for Year at a Glance, I work with HLAM Inner Circle members for 2-hours to ensure we are properly aligning personal and professional aspirations.

This is a very personal approach – I can’t know what you value,  or what you’ve told your future self, but I want to arm you with tools to propel you closer to your vision of success.

Essentially, you’re going to reverse engineer your year, jotting down no more than 5 key items per month. Shh I do this first in pencil and then fill in with colored pens, once I know I’m committing.

Pencil allows me to do my favorite thing – edit!

As a mompreneur, I’m mindful of the season when I know I will be more active on the home front, or desiring vacation time with family or just hubs. I can also map out big-ticket programming like HLAM events, Master Your Messaging group coaching and marketing needed for HLAM Inner Circle.

Big take away here: reverse engineer your year + take into account personal and professional aspirations, so you’re less reactive and more engaging in the joy of building your successful mompreneurs life.
