3 Ways to Improve Your Productivity as a Mompreneur

A little personal flashback …

COVID FOR A MOMPRENEUR

Somewhere between the plates in the sink, the half-written proposal on my screen, and

the client on Zoom that I was trying to politely guide away from adding yet another social media marketing strategy to her list, it hit me: This isn’t working.

As a work from home parent pre COVID, I thought I had the juggling act figured out. But it took two years of lockdown and virtual learning to shift my

perspective on productivity.

IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY Doesn’t Mean Doing More

The answer isn’t adding more to-dos, it’s editing and becoming more aware of how you allocate your precious time.

All too often, there are many ideas and not enough efficiency, which prevents us from developing quality work.

FACT :

Research shows that productively actually DECREASES as we work past 40-hours. And, quality of creativity also decreases after working on a project for more than 3-hours straight.

Here are my top ways to actually improve your productivity as a mom entrepreneur

1.     Add a Faux Commute to your routine – it’s a morning ritual with mental and physical benefits

2.     OHIO – Only Handle It Once, don’t start and stop tasks

3.     Creativity Day – A change of space does a brain good

GET MORE PRODUCTIVE with The Faux Commute

Start your day with a fake commute, a simple 10-minute walk around your neighborhood. As a between drop-off and pick-up mompreneur, you may not be taking a car or train to the city office, but this walk will serve as your mental que to get in the zone of working.

Data shows that commutes are a source of “liminal space” — a time free of both home and work

roles, that allows us to reset and get ready for the business-focused part of the day.

This forced pause helps you calmly detach from the morning routine and gives your mind freedom that often leads better problem-solving strategies. The faux commute is so

beneficial from productivity, that I built it into my Edit to Expand planner as a daily must-do because clients have told me how it’s boosted their clarity, once they get to their desk.

GET MORE PRODUCTIVE with OHIO: Only Handle It Once

Are you guilt of opening up emails reading one during your lunch break or as soon as you sit down at the desk and then not actually taking the response action?

The open/click-as-unread-email/reply later strategy is an epic time zapper. If you touch it, you should handle it. Email is the easiest “OHIO” example, but if you stay mindful, you’ll note other areas where this may be a productivity downfall [like starting but not finishing a blog post or starting but not finishing quarterly tax review.

Except for larger projects that require micro steps, don’t waste your precious time by handling, touching or looking at something more than once.

GET MORE PRODUCTIVE with a Creativity Day

The monotone nature of working in a home environment can take its toll on your creative output and efficiency, which is why I cherish my monthly creativity day.

It’s a chance to take my laptop to a fresh destination and soak up the energy around me. Aim to commit to a specific day at the start of the month, so that it’s blocked out.

The benefits of relocating to a venue with low-to-moderate level of ambient noise, like a coffee shop, has been linked to boosted creative output and improved decision-making

and acts as a motivator.
