3 Ways that Lots of Ideas Can Actually Harm Your Business, and How to Stay Focused as a Mompreneur

How many times have you scrolled on social and spotted another entrepreneur doing a marketing tactic that seemed like it could work for you?

Or, maybe you’ve attended panels and loaded up on brilliant tips that you hope to execute?

Here’s the problems:

·       It’s easy to get distracted by darling ideas and get off the path to stick to the goals you intended to execute.

·       More ideas, more problems. Nothing is completed to satisfaction.

·       It’s tempting to want to execute every expert’s phenomenal advice.

Let’s dig into how mom entrepreneurs can avoid getting distracted by darling ideas and well-meaning advice.

AVOID DARLING IDEAS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA

We’re all bombarded with advice on social media. You need to be an early adaptor of Threads. You need to use more video to tell your story. You need to sell on Amazon. You need to … STOOOOOP.

What you as a mompreneur need to do is clock into social media with a purpose, and not let all the darling ideas from experts and fellow mompreneurs distract you. Some may perfectly align with the strategies you’ve set. Most, however, will distract you from your intended goals.

Once I map out my Year at a Glance (aligning personal aspirations, professional aspirations and planned pauses) it easier to walk thru the noise and only “hear” the ideas that actually complement the path I’m on.

These are core skills outlined in our Edit to Expand Planner, which is exclusively given to HLAM Inner Circle members, and used throughout our 12-month coaching program.

AVOID YOUR OWN IDEA OVERWHELM

How many ideas have you have you had this week alone? As creative entrepreneurs, we’re never short on ideas. Which is why we must filter our own ideas, and decide which to toss, to execute and which to place in a Parking Lot.

The Parking Lot is another tool we put into the Edit to Expand Planner, and an essential skill we cultivate during HLAM Inner Circle Quarterly Planning sessions.

Facts On Goal Setting

·       84% of all people do not set any goals

·       People who follow a set scheduled action in commitment to the goal are 76% more likely to succeed in their goals

·       People who set specific and challenging goals led to higher performance 90% of the time

ADVOID EXPERT KNOWLDEGE FATIGUE

Much like when I walk into an ice cream shop and want to eat every flavor, I know that it’s not going to end well if I do a scoop of each yummy flavor. I must make a choice. You must make choices and not “eat” all the great advice on the menu.

To know what advice to take, you have to have done your own Value Driven Planning and Year at a Glance planning.

Years ago, when I was a handbag trend forecaster and founder of the first online shop for contemporary bags, a well-meaning agent told me I should widen my expertise. This was going to make me more money as a spokesperson. First it was shoes, then all fashion, then beauty. This was anything but operating with a dream schedule or clean, actionable goals.

Eventually, publicists got confused and couldn’t pitch me to their clients. I lost sight of my why, and neglected the loyal community that took me years to cultivate. Ultimately, I also LOST money.

FOCUS ON THE RIGHT IDEAS FOR RIGHT NOW

You don’t need to be overwhelmed or spread yourself thin. In fact, data shows it’s the opposite that will yield you the business growth you crave.

1.     Evaluate Your Year (top level with personal and professional aspirations in mind)

2.     Set Quarterly Goals that are Specific

3.     Dump Ideas into a Parking Lot (you don’t need to drive every car today)

4.     Use your Values and Set Goals to determine what advice to absorb and what to ignore
